“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed,” advises U.S. Navy Admiral William H. McRaven in a motivational speech published on youtube.com.

The speech is comprised of 10 ways to change the world, based on lessons Admiral McRaven learned at Basic Navy Seal Training. However, he says these lessons apply regardless of your gender, ethnic or religious affiliations, orientation, social status, or whether you ever served a day in uniform.

“Our struggles in this world are similar, and lessons to overcome those struggles and move forward, changing ourselves and changing the world around us will apply equally to all,” he said.

Other lessons include:

  • Find someone to help you through life
  • Respect everyone
  • Know that life is not fair and you will fail often

“But if you take some risks, step up when the times are the toughest, face the bullies, lift up the downtrodden and never, ever give up … if you do these things, the next generation and the generations that follow will live in a world far better than we have today.”
